How a Vedic gemstone is chosen
By planet, not by month. That single difference is why the stone the tradition suggests for you may have nothing to do with the birthstone on a jewellery chart. The most common approach strengthens the lord of your ascendant, on the reasoning that a strong Lagna lord supports the whole chart rather than one department of it. Other schools pick the lord of a specific house depending on what the wearer wants to support — a legitimate variation, not a contradiction.
Because the recommendation depends on the ascendant, it depends on your birth time and place. The gemstone calculator computes it from those rather than from your birth month.
What the tradition specifies
Classical texts are unusually precise here: carat weight scaled to body weight, an untreated and flaw-free stone, a specified metal, a specified finger and a weekday for first wearing. That precision is also why properly certified stones are expensive, and why a treated or synthetic stone is not held to carry the same effect.
An honest note
Gemstone remediation is a traditional prescription, not a scientifically demonstrated effect, and it should be described that way.
