What a yantra is
A yantra is a geometric diagram used as a focus for meditation and ritual. Where a mantra is sound and a gemstone is substance, a yantra is form — the same remedial intent expressed through geometry. Most are built from interlocking triangles, lotus petals and a square outer boundary, with a central point called the bindu.
Planetary and deity yantras
Two broad categories. Navagraha yantras correspond to the nine grahas and are prescribed the way gemstones are — to strengthen a specific planet in a chart. Deity yantras such as the Shri Yantra are devotional rather than chart-driven, and are used regardless of what a horoscope shows.
Placement and practice
Traditional guidance concerns direction, height and cleanliness rather than expense: most yantras are placed facing east or north, at or above eye level, in a clean space, and are traditionally energised through mantra before use. A printed or engraved yantra used with attention is held to serve; the tradition does not require an expensive one. As with every remedy on this site, this describes what the tradition prescribes rather than a demonstrated effect.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a yantra and a mantra?
A mantra is sound and a yantra is form. Both are used toward the same remedial end and are often used together — a yantra is traditionally energised by chanting the associated mantra.
Which yantra should I use?
A navagraha yantra is chosen for a specific planet, much as a gemstone is, so it depends on the chart. Deity yantras like the Shri Yantra are devotional and are not chart-dependent.
Where should a yantra be placed?
Traditionally facing east or north, at or above eye level, in a clean space. Direction and cleanliness matter more in the guidance than cost or material.
Does a yantra need to be expensive?
No. The tradition emphasises correct form, placement and regular use. A printed or simply engraved yantra used attentively is held to serve.
