Rashi and zodiac sign are the same twelve — read differently
The twelve signs are common to both traditions. What differs is which body is read in them and where the zodiac starts.
Western astrology reads your Sun sign and measures from the spring equinox. Vedic astrology reads your Moon sign — your rashi — and measures against the fixed stars. Those two starting points have drifted about 24 degrees apart, which is nearly a full sign. So your Vedic Sun sign is usually one earlier than the Western one you already know, and your rashi is a different sign again.
This matters practically: every Indian rashifal is written for the Moon sign. Reading one under your Sun sign is the single most common mistake people make with Indian astrology.
The four elements and three modalities
Each sign combines one element with one modality, and no two share the same pair — which is how twelve distinct signs come out of seven categories. Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) is read as initiative, Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) as practicality, Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) as thought and exchange, Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) as feeling.
The modality describes how a sign moves: cardinal signs start things, fixed signs hold them, dual signs adapt. It is also load-bearing rather than decorative — the D16 divisional chart starts its count from a different sign depending on the modality.
Where a sign sits in a chart matters more than the sign
A sign on its own says very little. What a reading actually works with is which planets occupy it, which house it falls in from your ascendant, and which nakshatra within it the Moon landed on. Two people with the same sun sign and different ascendants have genuinely different charts.
That is why sun-sign horoscope columns are so general: they are written for a twelfth of the population. A full birth chart is where the specifics live.

Do I need my birth time to know my sign?
For the Sun sign, almost never — it holds a sign for about a month. For the Moon sign, usually not either, since the Moon takes about two and a quarter days to cross one; only a birth on a day the Moon changed signs needs the time. For the ascendant, yes — it changes every two hours.
