What Bhagyank measures
Your Bhagyank is what your entire date of birth reduces to — day, month and full four-digit year added together and reduced to a single digit. Ank jyotish reads it as the longer direction of a life, in contrast to Mulank, which comes from the day alone and describes how you come across.
Reading it with the Mulank
Neither number is read alone. What practitioners look at is the relationship between the two ruling planets — friendly, neutral or hostile — which is taken as an indication of how much internal friction there is between outward manner and inner direction. A Mulank 1 (Sun) with a Bhagyank 8 (Saturn) is read very differently from Mulank 1 with Bhagyank 3 (Jupiter).

Bhagyank and the life path number

What does it mean if my Mulank and Bhagyank planets are hostile?
The tradition reads it as friction between how you present and where you are actually headed — a Sun Mulank under a Saturn Bhagyank, for instance. It is offered as a description of internal tension, not as a problem to be corrected.
Why do Western sources give me a different number?
Western numerology preserves the master numbers 11, 22 and 33 rather than reducing them, and some methods reduce day, month and year separately before adding. Both differences show up on the same birth date.
Is there a lucky number attached to my Bhagyank?
The tradition associates each number with a ruling graha, and the colours, days and numbers linked to that graha are what get called lucky. They come from the planet, not from the number itself.
