What Vastu Shastra is
Vastu is the Indian tradition of architecture and spatial arrangement. Its central idea is that a building has orientation-dependent qualities: the eight directions plus the centre each carry associations, and placement of rooms and objects is read against them. The northeast is traditionally kept light and open, the southeast associated with fire and so with the kitchen, the southwest with weight and stability.
How it relates to astrology
Loosely, and it is worth being accurate about this. Vastu and jyotish are separate systems that share a directional vocabulary — both assign directions to grahas, which is why remedial astrology sometimes reaches for a vastu adjustment.
