How it works
Mulank uses only the day you were born, not the month or year. Add the digits of the date until one digit remains: born on the 23rd gives 2 + 3 = 5, so the Mulank is 5. Each of the nine results is assigned a ruling planet, and the interpretation follows from that planet.
Step by step
- Take only the day of the month you were born — not the month, not the year.
- Add its digits together.
- If the result is still two digits, add again.
- Stop at a single digit, 1 to 9. Ank jyotish does not preserve master numbers at this level.
A worked example
Input: Born on the 23rd of any month
- Day of birth = 23
- 2 + 3 = 5
- 5 is already a single digit, so no further reduction
Result: Mulank 5, ruled by Mercury — read as quick, adaptable and communicative.

What changes the answer
- Only the calendar day matters. Time and place of birth change nothing, which makes this the one calculation here that needs nothing but a date.
- Someone born on the 5th, 14th and 23rd all share Mulank 5. The number is deliberately coarse.
- Master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are a Western numerology idea. Ank jyotish reduces all the way here.
- Mulank is fixed for life — it comes from a date that cannot change.

Is Mulank the same as the Western life path number?
No, and the two are often confused. The Western life path uses the entire date of birth, which makes it closer to Bhagyank. Mulank has no exact Western equivalent.
Why does my Mulank never come out as 11 or 22?
Because Mulank reduces all the way to a single digit by convention. Master numbers are a Western numerology idea that ank jyotish does not apply at this level.
Does the time or place of birth affect Mulank?
