A Janam Kundli is a map of the sky at the exact moment you were born — the date, the clock time, and the place. Change any one of those three and the chart changes, which is why a kundli made from a rough time is close to useless. Lagna, Chandra rashi and Nakshatra — the three that matter first
Most people know only their sun sign. Vedic astrology leans on three other markers. Your lagna (ascendant) is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your birth — it sets the entire house structure of the chart, and it is the reason two people born on the same day can have completely different readings. Your Chandra rashi (moon sign) governs the mind and emotions, and it is the sign a traditional daily rashifal is actually written for. Your nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions, a finer division than the twelve signs, and it is what pandits use for naming ceremonies, marriage matching and muhurat.
Twelve houses — where life actually happens
The chart is divided into twelve bhavas, each owning a department of life: the 2nd for money and family, the 3rd for siblings and courage, the 5th for children and creativity, the 8th for upheaval and inheritance, the 9th for fortune and dharma, the 12th for loss, foreign lands and moksha. A planet does not mean much on its own — it means something because of the house it sits in. Saturn in the 10th reads very differently from Saturn in the 7th.
Nine grahas and what each one carries
Vedic astrology works with nine grahas: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and the two lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu. Jupiter is expansion, teaching and luck; Saturn is delay, discipline and the things you earn slowly. Rahu amplifies and obsesses, Ketu detaches and renounces. Your kundli shows which sign and house each one occupies, plus its strength — exalted, debilitated, retrograde or combust — which is what decides whether a placement helps you or costs you.
Dasha — the timing layer
A chart tells you what is possible; the Vimshottari dasha tells you when. Life is divided into planetary periods — a mahadasha can run 6 to 20 years, with antardasha sub-periods inside it. The same Jupiter placement can sit quiet for a decade and then define three years of your life once its dasha opens. This is why "when will I get married" or "when will the job change" are dasha questions, not sun-sign questions.
Navamsa (D9) and the doshas
Beyond the main chart, the D9 navamsa is read for marriage and for the deeper strength of every planet — a planet that looks weak in the birth chart but strong in the navamsa often delivers late rather than never. Most of these are over-diagnosed and over-charged for; what matters is whether the cancellation conditions apply in your specific chart.
